Coflex®
Coflex® is an interspinous implant used in treating lumbar spinal stenosis, preferably in elderly individuals as an adjunct to a decompression procedure. Coflex provides stabilization to back bone without fusion in various forms of stenosis. Lumbar spinal stenosis can cause pain and may limit physical function. Coflex is a 'U' shaped titanium alloy device implanted between the spinous processes to relieve symptoms from low back spinal stenosis. The spinous processes are small stubby finger-like bones that slightly protrude off the back of each vertebral body.
During the procedure, the Coflex Implant is implanted between the spinous processes using fluoroscopic guidance (a type of x-ray). The Coflex implant is implanted at one or two levels of lumbar spine. The metal wings of either side of the implant are crimped against the bone to ensure proper contact with the bone. A mallet placed over the implants ensures firm implantation of the device into the bone.
